Bulky Waste Collection for Mattresses, Sofas and Furniture
Bulky waste collection is for the things that will never fit in a wheelie bin: an old mattress, a sagging sofa, a broken wardrobe or a pile of furniture left after a clear out. PHX Services carries the items out from where they are and takes them away, so you are not left dragging them onto the pavement.

What we do
Most people book a bulky collection after buying something new. The replacement bed arrives and the old mattress leans against the landing wall for weeks, or a new sofa is delivered and the old one ends up in the garage. A collection deals with that leftover in one visit.
You tell us what needs to go and where it is in the property, upstairs, in a loft room, in the garden shed. We confirm a price for that agreed list, arrive at the time we said and load everything ourselves.
- Mattresses and bed frames
- Sofas, armchairs and wardrobes
- Carried out from inside the home
- Reusable pieces set aside where possible
What a bulky waste collection usually covers
Think of anything large, awkward or heavy that the household bins and a car boot cannot cope with. Furniture disposal is the most common request, followed closely by mattress removal, because a mattress is floppy, heavy and hard to carry alone. Junk removal from a spare room or garage often falls into the same visit when a few big pieces sit alongside smaller clutter.
- Single, double and king size mattresses
- Sofas, sofa beds and recliners
- Wardrobes, chests of drawers and sideboards
- Dining tables, chairs and desks
- Garden furniture and old play equipment
- Boxes of household junk alongside the larger items
Fridges, freezers and appliances
Fridge removal is a little different from other furniture. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases and insulation that have to go to a facility able to treat them, so they cannot simply be mixed in with general waste. Mention any fridge, freezer or large appliance when you describe the job, and we will confirm whether it can be included and how it will be handled before anything is booked.
Council collections and private collections compared
Your local council will usually offer its own bulky waste collection. It is often the lowest cost route, but councils normally ask for items to be left outside or at the kerb, limit the number of pieces per booking and run collections on set days. Some councils charge for every collection, some include a small allowance, and the rules vary from one area to the next.
A private bulky waste removal suits people who cannot lift heavy items out of the house, need several pieces gone at once, or want to choose the day. The trade off is that you pay for the labour and the van as well as the disposal. Neither option is right for everyone, and it is worth checking your council's terms before you book anyone.
Getting ready for the collection
Clear a route from each item to the door so nobody has to move a bike or a stack of boxes on the way out. If a wardrobe is wedged in an alcove, empty it first; a full one is far heavier and can split as it is lifted. Mattresses should be dry, because a wet mattress is much heavier and harder to recycle.
If something might be worth selling or giving away, decide before the day. Items in good condition are set aside for reuse where possible, but the choice of what goes is always yours.

Helpful answers
Frequently asked questions
Is bulky waste collection free?+
Sometimes, through the council. Some councils include a limited free allowance, while many charge per collection and ask for items to be left outside. A private collection is a paid service, priced for the labour, van time and disposal involved.
How much is bulky waste collection?+
The price depends on how many items there are, their size and weight, how far they must be carried and whether any need special disposal, such as fridges. Send us a list or photos and we will confirm a price for that scope.
Can you take a mattress from an upstairs bedroom?+
Yes. Items are collected from where they are, including upstairs rooms, so you do not need to bring them down or leave them outside first.
Can I add a few bags of junk to a furniture collection?+
Yes. Tell us roughly how many bags or boxes there are alongside the larger pieces, so the quote and the van space allow for them.
