For updating household and personal records
Change of Address Checklist for Moving Home
Use this checklist to identify who holds your address, understand which records need separate updates and protect personal information when you leave your old home.
Changing your address involves more than arranging for letters to follow you. Different organisations maintain separate records, and updating one does not normally notify the others. Each adult should consider their own accounts, registrations and official correspondence.
Keep a private record of organisations contacted and any confirmation received. Use official websites or contact details you already trust rather than links in unexpected messages. The guidance below is general: individual circumstances, eligibility and the relevant organisation's current instructions determine what you need to submit.
Tell the council about the property change
Notify the council responsible for your old address that you are moving, and contact the council for the new address to set up or update council tax. This still matters when both properties are within the same council area. Provide accurate occupation and ownership information when requested.
Do not assume an existing discount or exemption automatically follows you. Explain the new household circumstances and check what evidence is required. Council tax updates are also separate from other council services, so review relevant benefits, parking permits and household collection arrangements individually.
Update driving and vehicle records separately
For a move within Great Britain, check the DVLA process for changing the address on your driving licence. Update the vehicle log book, known as the V5C, separately for each vehicle registered to you. Changing the licence does not change the vehicle record.
If you pay vehicle tax by Direct Debit, check the separate address update instructions for that arrangement too. Tell your motor insurer where the vehicle will be kept and disclose relevant changes in use. Northern Ireland has different driver licensing arrangements, so follow the appropriate official guidance.
Contact HMRC and financial providers
Use HMRC's official channels to report a change of address for the taxes and records relevant to you. Check the guidance for your circumstances, particularly if you have business responsibilities or receive payments administered through other departments. An employer's payroll update is not a substitute for checking your own records.
Notify banks, building societies, credit card providers, lenders and pension providers through their secure processes. Include savings and investment accounts you rarely use. Ask insurers whether the move changes policy details, since updating a correspondence address alone may not describe a changed property or risk.
Keep healthcare information connected
Tell your GP practice your new address and ask whether you can remain registered if you are moving outside its area. Registration options and services available outside a practice boundary can differ. If you need a new practice, follow its registration process rather than assuming records transfer automatically.
Update your dentist, optician and any hospital or community service involved in your care. Discuss prescriptions and essential supplies with the appropriate clinician or pharmacy. For someone receiving support at home, coordinate the address change with the service responsible so practical care arrangements are considered.
Review electoral registration and redirection
Register to vote at your new address through the appropriate official service. Paying council tax does not automatically put you on the electoral register, and moving does not automatically transfer your registration. Check eligibility and the instructions for any postal or proxy voting arrangements.
Royal Mail Redirection can help forward eligible mail, subject to its terms and exclusions, but it does not update the sender's records. Check the names and addresses covered by your application. Continue notifying organisations directly, and make separate arrangements for deliveries or correspondence that redirection does not cover.
Find the accounts that are easy to overlook
Review utilities, broadband, subscriptions, schools, childcare, employers, professional registrations and pet microchip databases where relevant. Check shopping accounts before ordering, because saved delivery addresses can remain unchanged even after you update your main profile. Include trusted personal contacts without sharing your new address publicly.
Record meter readings where applicable and retain account closure confirmations. Destroy unwanted documents securely rather than leaving them behind. PHX Services, legally Phoenix Removal Services, is based near Aylesbury HP22 and provides nationwide removals; administrative updates remain separate from the physical move.

Frequently asked questions
Does Royal Mail Redirection notify everyone for me?+
No. It forwards eligible mail under the service terms but does not amend the address held by banks, government bodies or other senders. Treat redirected letters as reminders to contact organisations you may have missed.
Does changing my driving licence update my V5C?+
No. They are separate DVLA records and need separate attention. Check the vehicle tax Direct Debit record too if relevant, and use the official process appropriate to your circumstances rather than assuming records are linked.
Can everyone in the household use one update?+
Some household accounts allow a shared notification, but personal records usually need individual attention. Check whose names appear on each account and obtain permission before handling another adult's information or making changes on their behalf.
Should I include my new address on social media?+
Public posting is not necessary for an address update. Share details privately with people who need them, review location settings and avoid publishing documents or photographs that expose account information, keys or other sensitive details.
